Benny Goodman was his first idol, but he soon became impressed by the work of the great Charlie Parker, and took up the saxophone as a result.

Sir John Dankworth, CBE (20 September 1927 - 6 February 2010), was an English jazz composer, saxophonist and clarinetist.He was widely thought of as Britain's most famous jazz musician. He had a very big influence in the development of jazz in Britain.He composed film music and several television theme tunes such as "The Avengers" and "Tomorrow's World". Sir John Dankworth, who has died aged 82, was one of the British jazz scene's leading lights. Born in Woodford, Essex, in 1927, the young Dankworth had violin and piano lessons before taking up the clarinet and alto saxophone. By the age of 17 he had won a place at the Royal Academy of Music. The Johnny Dankworth Orchestra hit the charts in l956 with their recording of ‘Experiments with Mice’, triumphed at the American Newport Jazz Festival in l959 and also played at Birdland, Lewisohn Stadium (with their guest Louis Armstrong) and in concerts opposite Duke Ellington. Sir John, better remembered as Johnny Dankworth, died aged 82 at King Edward VII Hospital in Central London. The saxophonist had been unwell for months.
A long time coming, but here it is, the first retrospective of jazz man Johnny Dankworth's contributions to both TV & film. Most of it is out of print and has been for many decades. Disc 1 features Dankworth's contributions to the movies, some of them obscure and fairly forgettable.
In 1964 her Shakespeare and All that Jazz album with Dankworth was well received. Dankworth and Laine founded the Stables theatre in 1970 in what was the old stables block in the grounds of their home. It was an immediate success, with 47 concerts given in the first year.
